Nigel Lythgoe Announces Departure from So You Think You Can Dance
Nigel Lythgoe, the executive producer and co-creator of So You Think You Can Dance, has announced that he is voluntarily stepping back from participating in this year's series. His decision comes a week after former SYTYCD and American Idol judge Paula Abdul accused him of sexual assault in a lawsuit filed on Dec. 29. Lythgoe stated to The Hollywood Reporter on Jan. 5, 'I did so with a heavy heart but entirely voluntarily because this great program has always been about dance and dancers, and that's where its focus needs to remain.' Additionally, he declared, 'In the meantime, I am dedicating myself to clearing my name and restoring my reputation.' Despite his departure, FOX, Dick Clark Productions, and 19 Entertainment have confirmed that the show remains committed to the contestants, and no decision has been made regarding a replacement judge. In her lawsuit, Abdul accused Lythgoe of groping and kissing her during their time working together on SYTYCD and American Idol, as well as forcing himself on her during a dinner at his house. Lythgoe has vehemently denied the allegations, stating, 'Not only are they false, they are deeply offensive to me and to everything I stand for.'
