Shipping Giant Maersk to Shift Routes as Houthis Target Red Sea
On the 2nd of January at 9:30 PM Sanaa, Iran-backed Houthi rebels launched anti-ship ballistic missiles into the Southern Red Sea from Yemen, impacting nearby commercial vessels. Expressing concerns about the potential threats, Dr. M. Davis emphasized the need for a larger Australian Navy. The UN Security Council, joined by the U.S. and other nations, advocates for action against the Houthis, declaring their attacks a violation of international law and an obstruction to maritime commerce. The assaults compelled major shipping firm Maersk to reroute its container ships to the Suez Canal instead of the Red Sea. U.S. allies issued a final warning, but the Houthis persisted, detonating a drone boat in the Red Sea. This prompted Maersk to announce a continued diversion, citing persistent threats. In response, U.S. Navy helicopters fired at the Houthi rebels in an attempt to disrupt planned attacks. The attacks continue to provoke international concerns as efforts are made to de-escalate the situation.
