Introducing the Redesigned Weather Widget in Windows 11 Dev Channel Build 23612
Eleven years ago, Windows 8 brought about a freshly redesigned lock screen, introducing new features like app notifications, calendar information, and weather updates. Despite this, the lock screen has not received much attention from developers over the past decade. Now, with the release of Windows 11 Dev Channel build 23612, a much-needed update has finally arrived for the lock screen's weather widget. This revamped widget features rounded corners, a translucent background, and improved weather data. Notably, users can now click or tap on the widget to view more detailed weather information, something that was not possible with the previous Stable Channel implementation. However, one drawback of the new weather widget is that tapping it opens Microsoft Edge and the MSN website instead of the dedicated Weather app, regardless of the user's default browser. To disable the new lock screen experience, users can navigate to Settings > Personalization > Lock Screen and select 'None' from the Lock Screen Status drop-down. As Microsoft gradually rolls out the new widget to Windows Insiders with the EN-US locale, users can expect further changes and updates in the future. Additionally, users can provide feedback on the new widget or suggest improvements by pressing Win + F. For those who do not want to wait for the rollout, there is a method to force-enable the new widget using the ViVeTool app.
