Springdale Public Library Offers Passive Volunteering Kits for Students

The Springdale Public Library is giving students in grades 6-12 the opportunity to give back to their community through passive volunteering. Each month, students can apply for a volunteer kit which contains all the necessary supplies for that month's activity. This initiative enables students to contribute to the community in their own time, even if they are unable to physically be at the library. Jennifer Johnson, the young adult librarian and student volunteer coordinator, mentioned that this program challenges negative stereotypes about teenagers and encourages them to actively participate in community service. Upon completion of the volunteer activity, Johnson will approve a minimum of three volunteer hours for each student. The current project involves creating hand-crafted cards to be donated to the Springdale Senior Center. Although there are typically 25 spots available each month, Johnson is prepared to increase the capacity if there is high demand. She aims to empower students by giving them ownership of their contribution and fostering a sense of achievement.
